1998 Outstanding Rancher of the Year
Carolyn, John, Christi and Matt pose for a picture while John receives 1998 Outstanding Rancher of the Year.

Oak Creek Farms, established in 1967 by John and Carolyn Kopicinski, has registered Red Brangus, Brangus, Red Angus, and Angus. The family business has evolved over the past 30 years from continuous hard work in the selection and breeding of seed stock resulting in exceptional cattle. Our son, Mark and our daughter and son-in-law, Christi and Matt Strock continue to be involved in the ranching operations.

In the early years, the ranch focused on breeding Red Brangus cattle and we were continuously looking for ways to improve and bring better genetics to our herd. In order to have access to the best genetics, we implemented an artificial insemination program in the late seventies and by the mid eighties embryo work was being done on the ranch.

We began breeding Red Brangus cattle in the sixties. At that time, Red Brangus cattle consisted primarily of ½ Brahman and ½ Angus. However, in the early eighties, Oak Creek Farms began breeding to follow the guidelines of registered Brangus cattle, breeding only 3/8 Brahman x 5/8 Angus purebred Red Brangus. This is how registered Brangus cattle are bred and we wanted the consistency of purebred cattle in our program as well. We acquired more property in the early 1990’s and began expanding our herd by purchasing Brangus and Angus from Chappell Gate Ranch in Chappell Hill and Southgate Ranch in Floresville, and purchasing Red Angus cattle from Davenport’s Triple Creek Ranch.

International Sales
Mark and Christi help in facilitating international sales to South America. Over 200 heifers were shipped to South America in 1997 and the cattle are doing great!

Oak Creek Farms continues to breed only the best genetics so that they may in turn offer the best cattle to the market. Oak Creek Farms has sold cattle around the world including Hawaii, Mexico, and South America. Through our experience and in-depth understanding of ranching and breeding cattle, we feel we are not only able to offer you the best cattle, but go above and beyond that in offering genetic consulting. This is something the ranch has focused on and we would be more than happy to help you with your breeding program. Please feel free to contact us for more information about our cattle program. We are always pleased to show our cattle operation and would appreciate the opportunity to work with you!

INTERNATIONAL RED BRANGUS -Oak Creek Farms began making a transition to breeding 3/8 Brahman x 5/8 Angus Red Brangus cattle in the 1980’s. This process was done by using quarter blood bulls mated to half blood cows to get the traditional 3/8 Brahman x 5/8 Angus, which Oak Creek Farms considers to be Purebred Red Brangus. Also, Oak Creek Farms purchased (black) Brangus that were red gene carriers or red cattle out of Brangus herds that were from red gene carriers. Many of these animals were already mulit-generation 3/8 Brahman x 5/8 Angus. These 3/8 Brahman x 5/8 Angus Red Brangus are of the same percentage as the Brangus cattle of the IBBA. Some of our Red Brangus and Brangus are seventh generation plus cattle. These cattle are in high demand domestically and internationally.

Dedication & Contributions
John and Carolyn receive an award for their dedication and outstanding contributions to the Junior Program.

BRANGUS PROGRAM - Oak Creek Farm’s Brangus herd is based on the cattle we purchased from the Chappell Gate Ranch in 1994. Chappell Gate’s breeding philosophy was to breed productive, efficient cattle. These functional cattle have been effective and efficient producers in our herd and continue to be in demand in today’s market. Also, Oak Creek Farms purchased a group of Angus females from Southgate Ranch that had first generation Brangus calves by side. These Brangus cattle have done a tremendous job in our herd.

RED ANGUS – In the summer of 1996, Oak Creek Farms purchased 55 heifers out of 88 Red Angus heifers from Davenport’s Triple Creek Ranch. Triple Creek Ranch was the owner of the 1995 Grand Champion Red Angus Bull at the Houston Livestock Show. We already had a small number of Red Angus and this addition put us in the Red Angus bull business. These cattle have proven to be very functional and continue to be in high demand.

ANGUS - Oak Creek Farms purchased some outstanding Angus females in 1997, including donor quality cows from Southgate Ranch. We also purchased a bull from David’s Angus that won Intermediate Champion at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and that has been throwing great calves. We added these Angus to the small herd of Angus that we purchased as embryos in the early 1990’s. The Angus cattle have done very well and have proven to be an asset to our breeding program.
